April 2010 Compuscan Academy was proud to deliver the National Certificate in Banking qualification for 10 unemployed learners in Kimberley in the Northern Cape. The project was endorsed by BANKSETA, The Banking Sector Education and Training Authority, co-ordinated by Miloc Financial Services, a renowned credit provider and supported by Banken Financial Services, a micro-finance institution. The learners’ were from various backgrounds but shared the same passion and drive to pursue a career in the Micro Lending Industry. The duration of the project was two months in February and March 2010 with the learners’ having to attend two weeks of training each month. Each two-week training period was followed by a week’s in-service training at Miloc Financial Services and Banken Financial Services, both well-known in the micro-finance industry in Kimberley.During the first month’s training the learners were introduced to Credit Management. They learnt about the Legal Framework, applying Credit Assessment Practices and Methodologies as well as Fraud Prevention and Monitoring. This was followed by practice time so that they could adapt their learning to real-world situations. During the second month’s training the learners learnt about Credit Control and Collections, Managing Loan Portfolios, Financial Skills as well as Marketing and Micro-Finance Administration. This practice session involved completing and assessing loan applications as well as other skills to understand how to succeed in a micro-finance business. Overall the National Certificate in Banking is an intensive training course that involves formative and summative assessments as well as in-service practical assignments. The learners were given the best possible learning experience that will benefit them in their career development. The training was structured in such a way as to also facilitate learners to find employment into the workplace and has proved to be very successful. As a result, we are proud to announce that three of the learners have already accepted job offers within the industry. Compuscan Academy received this positive feedback about all the parties that were involved in the training: “Special Thanks goes out to André Olivier, Charles Marais and Craig Sassman for their expertise concerning the different aspects of banking and the time and dedication they put in to make this project a success. Thank you to Natalie Fourie from Miloc and André Visagie from Banken, as well as the staff of the respective organisations for making our practical experience worthwhile. Also, our sincere thanks to Bankseta for providing the funding and investing in our futures. This qualification will enable us to find positions in the formal banking sector, and enabled us to further our studies which due to various reasons, was not previously a possibility for us.” Through projects like these Miloc and Banken are leading the way for many other lenders to become more involved and implement BANKSETA Projects.
